Shutter Island

Shutter island opening sequence

Firstly there is the over the shoulder view which depics and old black abandoned mental asylum this particular scene brings to sight a multitude of dark and dull colours this suggests a frightfully creepy vibe whilst the detectives passing by in the car monitored by the police. Being abandoned is then suggest the loneliness and silencee amongst the island.

Another use of a camera shot is extreme longshot of the island this helps display how large and a huge this place really is. It also suggests to the audience that it could be incredibly lonely to work there this poses a stereotypical view on somewhere that seems abandoned by almost all of the human race.

The music used in this clip is very dark and mysterious toned which gives the whole atmosphere sinister approach. The music is high-pitched and almost threatening it gives the audience the sense of tension as it is something frightening is about to happen. As soon as the car approaches the big gates of the large facility the music then gets quicker and louder to be more tents shown that there is something un settling about the whole place.

There is a lengthy process of digetic sound used at the start of the clip. This is the noise of the seagulls on the drowning sounds of the sea waves crashing against the other waves. This suggests to the audience how lonely is that any people can't really be heard on this island.

The location used in this clip is an almost deserted island where only the people that work there are the police as well as this the only other people that are there are mentally ill and detectives. The island is filled with large tall rocks and over the growth of green scenery surrounded by water all the way around this suggests a lonely and creepy atmosphere in the way that know one is able to leave the island once they are there.

The costume is used within this clip on very stereotypical as the detectives are dressed in long coats with hats on their heads. The police are in stereotypical uniforms that was set for the particular part in time as modern please don't wear the same uniforms. This has been applied so the audience to gain a backward spiral into the past and how people dressed.

During the clip there is a long sequence shows the camera approach the vast island from a very far away perspective then gradually gets closer and closer until we have met with one of the detectives this has been implemented so the audience can see how big the island is compared to one single human being.

I shot reverse shot shows the facial expression is of each detective and exactly how easy they both feel under the nervousness of being on an island surrounded by police man giving the impression something absolutely major has happened on this remote place. As well as this they travel there on the ship making it the only way to escape.

Night of the hunter (1955)

The opening title sequence clip I choose is of Charles Laughton's film The night of the hunter from 1955.

Firstly the music you are met with keeps you within the time set of 1955 as it isn't anything like modern music. The music that runs within the title sequence starts off being very dark and sinister suggesting this isnt an ordinary film gives the impression something bad to happen. Then following on from this the dark tone suddenly goes into a high pitch the gradually gets faster and faster this shows the film could be filled with suspense. After that has been repeated twice the music then turns into a woman's voice, she appears to be seeing a very normal and calm song with the lyrics 'dream little one dream' and 'dream my little one dream' this suggests a creepy effect as it is unusually different and almost opposite from the previous music but it is also leaves the audience wondering who she was singing about.

The text on the scene is very bold and large but simplistic and easy to read as it is also set on the reverse block as the writing is white on a black background. Each individual letter is in capitals the letters don't reveal anything about the narrative that don't suggest the genre. Firstly before the main title on the film there are two actors names from this shows the importance as the names will on its own grab the audience and make people watch the film if both of them are in at. This is a good strategy used by the director of the film will gain more viewers.

Finally from each title slide there is a simple fade transition to the next this allows the audience to clearly see and understand when a new title slide is on also adds to the simplistic theme. As well as this each slide is positioned in the centre of the scene making it not jumbled and easy to read.

Lost Highway Opening Scene

Firstly this clip has a narrative enigma which is a technique used at the beginning of the movie to hook the audience in so they don't switch off,  following this there are several uses of sound in the clip such as dialogue. The only dialogue in this instance is when the main character approaches the speaker in the room and he is greeted with a very dark and sinister toned muffle.  This puts further emphasis on the thriller Trend as it could be considered creepy and worrying and from this it makes the audience edge closer to the end of the seat. This perfectly fits the thriller stereotypical convention of being filled with suspense leaving questions that need to be answered, who has left the message?

Another use of the sound in this instance is when a low non-diegetic sound of creepy music is added to give the effect of supernatural behaviour or something bad is going to happen. This portrays a big picture of what is to come next and possibly what type of film it could be. It instantly grab some grips the audience through the surreal seeing using all sorts of different techniques to suggest mystery.

A long Point of View shot shows the big American styled house and a desolate Street once filled with noise now empty. This shot lingers which enables the audience to concentrate on this empty street. Following on from this it shows the main character's  facial expression whilst looking out of the window it shows him in a state of confusion as to why the street is empty and then the longshot emphasises the creepy tone the director is trying to achieve with this shot. This automatically links the stereotypical representation of the thriller convention as the scene appears to leave it on a chilling cliffhanger adding to the atmosphere is the presence of a misty background.

The location of the house fit the stereotype of an American theme, as you wouldn't see this seems style elsewhere. The environment gives the sense of loneliness and desolation as there is and any one on the streets and there is zero noise.  But however in this suburban built-up area there is lots if not  dozens of houses, parked cars and lush green scenery of trees and plants although there is and any sense of human life giving yet another chilling atmosphere and mysterious narrative.

Within the male characters house there is very low key lighting which gives an impression of poorly lit facilities but the director has still made the audience able to visibly see him. this gives an eerie atmosphere and adds to a stereo typical convention as to how suspense is portrayed through the use of dark colours, shadows and poor lighting.
